Gardens of Savannah

G and C (Savannah 2019)

Back in Savannah once again ... it's about the only way we get to experience something that resembles Spring.

So, since nothing says "Spring" like blooming flowers, we spent time exploring Savannah's gardens.  Mostly private, hidden and generally closed to the public, a few are opened for viewing by the public every April.

"Wonderful".  "Refreshing".  "Spectacular".  All those adjectives are appropriate.  But since a picture is, indeed, worth far more than words, we'll switch things up a bit and put the emphasis on our photos of the trip.

Enjoy.

Well, no, a lion won't bite you. But …

That's just a sample of what's on view to anybody who might want to take a stroll in Old Savannah.  So, what happens if you jump the fence?

Bad things!  Sometimes very bad things.

Savannah is rightfully proud of the beauty of their city and goes to extraordinary lengths to keep it sparkling clean. They employ a small army of men to rake, sweep and generally tidy up every inch of public space every day.  You will rarely see a leaf or twig on the ground.  No. Really.

The city is dotted with fountains, the Queen of which is the Forsyth Park Fountain.

The fountain is surrounded by a cast iron fence.  It (as are all the public fountains) most definitely NOT for bathing, drinking or just plain sloshing around in.  Feel free to take all the pictures you want.  You can stare, gawk or just stand and gaze all day long.  What you cannot do is jump over the fence.

This prohibition is widely known and generally adhered to by locals and tourists alike.  It is also rigidly enforced by the police.

Run For The Border!

IN MEMORIAM AREY GUYTON "MR. SAVANNAH August 21, 2019

So, much to our surprise as we sat in the park one day, a young man unwisely decided to hop the fence and have his girlfriend take his picture INSIDE the fountain.  Cindy and I, along with our friend, Mr. Savannah * sprang off our bench and shouted at the miscreant, "HEY YOU! GET OUTTA THERE!!!"  Well, Mister Man, let me tell you, that guy was up and over the fence and sprinting out of the park in a flash.  His girlfriend wasn't waiting around.  She was down the road and not looking back before the guy stood up to make his escape.  Mr. Savannah was encouraging their flight with a loud cry of, "Run for the border!" Indeed, they ran.  And ran.  And ran.

We laughed.  And laughed.  And laughed.

*For more about Mr. S. see our earlier posts.

Is Savannah really that nice all year round? You've got a knack for making a silk purse.... Anyway, I'm convinced; Savannah's on my bucket list. -p
